Trip to Surajkund Mela 2013

Surajkund is an ancient reservoir of the 10th century, 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) away to the south west from a more ancient dam of the 8th century called the Anagpur Dam; both are located in Haryana, India.[1] Surajkund (literal meaning is 'Lake of the Sun') is an artificial Kund (‘Kund’ means “lake” or reservoir) built in the backdrop of the Aravalli hills with an amphitheatre shaped embankment constructed in semicircular form. It is said to have been built by the Tomar king Suraj Pal of Tomar dynasty in the 10th century. Tomar was a sun worshipper and he had therefore built a Sun temple on its western bank.

Every Year in the month of February Surajkund Mela is organised where craftsmen from small villages or small scale industries get to display their talent in front of public and also display there work which is for sale and the price is negotiable as you can bargain with the shack owners as price rate is never fixed. This obviously makes Surajkund a hot spot for housewife's, working women, children, young adults and foreign tourists as you get to see the textile and handicrafts of India in Mela as well as buy it for you home or personal usage.

I went to Surajkund on the 8th of Feb as trip from my school as I am studying fashion and textiles of India. This was a fun field trip and I also gained a lot of knowledge about Indian Handicrafts. If you are studying fashion then Surajkund is a Must Visit.

I made some purchases at the Mela and I also clicked few pictures as the Mela was breathtaking full of colourful, beautiful people!!...

These are some of the Moments that I was able to capture to be really honest it is very difficult to discover Surajkund Mela in a day. It is definitely one of the best Mela or Fair in our country where inter-cultural exchange can be seen be seen in such a colourful way!!

I give Surajkund Mela 5 Stars for standing up to it's reputation and I will also say that IITF is nothing in front of this Mela. I would rather go to Surajkund Mela again next year rather than wasting my time in the crowded IITF where there is nothing much left to discover.
